Born 1921 in San Antonio De Los Baños, Cuba. Plays Bongos, congas, tres and bass.
As a boy Candido learned to play side by side his grandfather using two cans of condense milk (Latas de leche condensada) as his first bongos
Performed with Machito, Billy Taylor, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Lionel Hampton, Erroll Garner, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, George Shearing, Stan Kenton, Fania All Stars, Woody Herman, Quincy Jones, Charlie Mingus, Gerry Mulligan, Ray Charles, Dinah Washington, Joe Williams, Tony Bennett, Tito Puente, Chico O'Farrill, Sonny Rollins, Coleman Hawkins, Celia Cruz, etc.
Candido has over 100 recording credits with the most famous jazz, Latin and R&B artists.

Israel "Cachao" Lopez
Israel "Cachao" Lopez has been creating Cuban music for over sixty years. Born into a musical family, he was conservatory-trained and played with the world renowned Filarm?nica de Habana at age thirteen. The young Cachao, too short to reach the bridge of his double bass, would often perch on a soap box during performances by the orchestra. Today, he cradles the instrument as though he were its doting grandfather. An ironic background for the recipient of last year's Billboard New Artist of the Year Award. In 1939, Cachao and his late brother Orestes created a new form with their song "Mambo." Faster than the traditional styles it was derived from, the mambo spurred on a new dance craze and introduced Machito, P»rez Prado and Mongo to the Americanos del Norte, leading to the embracing of so-called "Afro-Cuban" music by Dizzy Gillespie and other jazz cats.

Paint job's music to his ears

It was quite a different canvas: A bass.
But for Cuban-American artist Humberto Benitez, painting a bass for legendary bassist Israel ''Cachao'' López was ``an enormous honor.''
The Coral Gables artist was tapped for the job by Anthony Columbie, who does vocals for Cachao, after he saw Benitez paint a small cello for a CubaNostalgia show two years ago.
Benitez used acrylics to paint a nostalgic scene of his trademark rumberas and bongo players with Cachao's face looming over the party on the bass presented to Cachao during last Saturday's concert to mark his 80th musical anniversary.
''What a jam session,'' said Benitez, who also plays percussion. ``I'm still blown away.''
Benitez calls that job ``the most memorable project I've ever done.''
